The best casting company for one part is rarely the best casting company for the next one. A foundry that pours large sand-cast pump housings in ductile iron is not the same shop as one that pulls investment-cast titanium blades for aerospace, and neither of them is the right partner for a high-volume aluminum die-cast consumer product. Their total call volume has been steady, but the character of the online inquiries is very different from the calls.

Even though the online form asks for less information than a phone intake would collect, the RFQs that come through it consistently include the drawing, the alloy, and the buyer’s application. As the sales team put it, “the quality has been better, because even though people have to put less information in, we’re getting the pertinent info we need to quote — customers give useful information because they aren’t asked to fill out a bunch of unnecessary fields.”

They also flagged how specificity drives close rates. “Aluminum bronze RFQs are slam dunks for us because they’re so specific — if a buyer is coming to us for that, we can usually close it.” The same principle applies across casting: the more precisely a foundry’s website and directory profile describe the alloys and applications it actually pours, the better matched its inbound RFQs become.

Not every online RFQ is a fit, though. The Erie Bronze team was blunt about the noise. Some inquiries turn out to be one-off replacement parts where a new pattern would cost roughly $3,000 while the finished part is worth about $1,500 — a project neither side wants to run. A small number of “RFQs” are actually salespeople using the quote form to pitch software or services. Every casting foundry lives or dies on quote turnaround. When the incoming RFQ is complete, the foundry can price with confidence and reply quickly. When key details are missing, quoting slows down or the shop declines to quote at all. A strong casting RFQ typically includes:

  1. Part drawing or 3D model with dimensions, tolerances, wall thickness, draft, and revision level.
  2. Alloy and specification — the grade, chemistry, and any mechanical property requirements the finished casting must meet.
  3. Estimated annual volume and mix so the foundry can tell whether the part fits its production model.

The problem is cost.
